In cooperation with the Faculty of Anthropology  (http://www.bsos.umd.edu/anth/), the Center for Heritage Resource Studies (http://www.heritage.umd.edu/) and the University of Maryland Study Abroad Program (http://www.intprog.umd.edu/ies/StudyAbroad/index.html), the Ename Center for Public Archaeology and Heritage Presentation has developed and coordinated summer heritage courses in 2001, 2002 and 2005.  The course will also be held in the summer of 2006.

These courses survey the rich and varied archaeological and historic heritage of Flanders and its multicultural European past. The participants explore how research, interpretation and tourism influence the way the past is preserved and presented.

During these courses, heritage is highlighted from three different points of view: scientific research, heritage management and presentation, and tourism.

Students take part in archaeological research through which they have the opportunity of gaining a deeper insight and broader perception of heritage sites. Visits to museums and monuments and lectures by heritage professionals highlight the problems of conservation, interpretation and presentation. Finally, the impact of cultural tourism on historical buildings, city development and local inhabitants is examined through specially selected case studies.
