ACTIVITIES
The work of the Ename Center proceeds with the understanding that Heritage is an essential component of civil society and social relations in the present — with all the dangers and opportunities that this relationship entails. As a medium for collective memory and reflection, the material remains of past societies (both our own and of other cultures) can either build walls between us or encourage a sense of understanding and insight about who we all are — and from where we have come.

In that light, our activities are guided by a consideration of the constructive role that heritage can play in contemporary life. In each of our projects, we attempt, first of all, to identify the Community Context. Where is the heritage? Why and for whom is it being preserved? Next, we try to look closely at the general Historical Background. What parts of the story or perspectives have never been told?

In developing an Interpretive Concept, we seek to communicate information, insights, and encourage reflection in new and innovative ways. To that end, we often utilize Interpretive Technologies as tools for communication. Their selection must be based on sustainability, durability, and cost-effectiveness — recognizing that a heritage site must serve as a community’s memory institution, not only an attraction for outside visitors. Its success should not be measured by economics or attendance figures alone.
